  • Freshwater pearls are formed in mussels that live in rivers, lakes, and ponds, as opposed to saltwater pearls, which are formed in oysters in oceans and seas.
  • Most freshwater pearls are cultivated on farms, with China being the largest producer. The process involves carefully implanting tissue into the mussel to stimulate pearl formation.
  • Freshwater pearls come in a variety of natural colors, including white, pink, peach, lavender, and cream. Their color depends on the mussel species and the water’s mineral content.
  • Freshwater pearls are known for their diverse shapes, ranging from round to baroque (irregular). They can also grow larger than many saltwater pearls, depending on cultivation time.
  • Freshwater pearls are composed almost entirely of nacre (the lustrous material secreted by mollusks), making them more durable and resistant to wear compared to saltwater pearls, which have a thinner nacre layer.
  • Freshwater pearls are often more affordable than saltwater pearls, making them accessible to a wider audience while still providing natural beauty.
  • Pearls have long been associated with purity, elegance, and timeless beauty. In New England, freshwater pearls often evoke a connection to the region’s rivers and lakes, reflecting nature’s tranquility.
  • Freshwater pearls were highly prized in ancient times, especially in Europe and Asia. They have been used in jewelry, clothing, and ceremonial adornments for centuries.
  • Many freshwater pearl farms practice environmentally friendly methods, as the health of the mussels and their environment is critical for pearl production.
  • In New England and beyond, freshwater pearls are cherished for their natural beauty and connection to traditional craftsmanship, often seen in heirloom jewelry pieces.
